the New Guy's significant contribution

This post is about portrayal of how being a new guy can get you a very very tedious task yet without a significant purpose or contribution to the somewhat *real deal* job to the company.

Of course just a portrayal and a possible scenario, with a totally unrelated field of work~ ^^.

Happy Halloween 2010!

HAPPY HALLOWEEN Everyone!
I have been occupied with this pict from Thurs and until just now (Sun 5.40pm) so now comic this week >.<

Here's some explanation:
-a grim reaper with his scythe;

-Then the usual guy with anatomy guy face mask. The shirt is a play on body glove and Left4Dead logo

-The small guy over there is the rabbit that has been reappearing on my event wishes tag. I personally like the shirt where it's a heart with the arteries and there's a spider on it with its web. Came up with that idea out of the blue

-and the girl it's just a random ghost from Japanese folklore!

Hmm, feel free to give me comments ;-)

Demotivational Poster - Stress 2

If you remember the first version of this stress poster, it was about being unemployed.

Since no matter what state you are in, employed or unemployed, you are still prone to stress and since the former gives you money the latter, the former does not, I shalt work-eth first at least for the money

Just to be safe, here's a disclaimer:
This depiction by no means represent all or of part of my or anyone else's working experience and the intention of this depiction is only for entertaining purpose and should not be taken into account seriously. If you learn how to enjoy your work, you don't have to look as miserable as that. haha

Put in more oil for those who are still hunting! Put in more oil too, for those who are "enjoying" your work

10.10.10

Other than two friends' birthday, the repeated digits thingy is not that special for me. It will be if I had gotten 10.1010 million dollars today or 10 girls asked to be my girl friend today, but nope, none of them happened.

Anyway, this was a scheduled post, and I have been busy with real life (read: work) so yeah.... will come up with drawing pretty soon

Mid Autumn Festival!

Tonight it will be a perfect full moon.. Have you tried any mooncake? XD

If you are unfamiliar with the story behind (not that I am that familiar either) but it's roughly about a heavenly couple who was banished to earth.. The guy (Houyi) became a great archer and was given a holy pill to become a deity again after he managed to shoot down 9 suns before it was going to scorch the earth. He needed to fast for at least a year before consuming the pill so he kept it under his pillow.

One day, Chang'e (the lady) his banished-from-heaven-wife found it and consumed the pill without bearing any knowledge of what could happen and she began to levitate. It was too late for Houyi as when he got back, she was already flying towards the moon. In the end she was stuck there after she coughed out the pill

The moon rabbit is actually something like a chemist for the heavenly beings and he was told by Chang'e to make a pill in order to get her back to the earth. However, the rabbit I drew is making mochi (rice-cake) instead (it's the same rabbit but it's japanese version of the rabbit)
But the rabbit is also a recurring character, hahaha, check it out here http://luimenta.blogspot.com/2010/04/happy-easter-2010.html

Here's Prof W's rough story about Mid Autumn Fest for your better understanding
and here's Prof W's explanation for the rabbit ;)

I obviously need more time with my drawing tablet hahaha. But yeah! Happy Mid Autumn everyone :)

the ones below are mandarin oranges

Ukiyo-e with digital attempt

Ukiyo-e is an ancient Japanese brush painting style where the artist will use a wood plank, draw on it with brush, carve it, apply color, put paper over it and then "print it".

I just attempted to draw a self portrait by using this style with brush on plain A4 white paper drawing book and with normal ink-brush and chinese ink.
After that I processed the edits with photoshop (mainly only coloring with brush, add texture, lighting effects and saturation). The black portions (the main sketch) are still handrawn.
Here goes nothing:

the small writing at the bottom left (wiriamu, jibun no eizou = William, Self Portrait)

Meanwhile, this is how Ukiyo-e was done. Below is a picture of Sharaku (kabuki actor Otani Onji II)  which has become an iconic figure in japanese art.
(picture obtained from the second link below)

Guitar

Anyways I mentioned before that I want to participate in this
http://www.futuregenerationartprize.org/

So that will explain why there has been no release last week. Since drawing this kind of thing takes even much more time and last week was spent on doing this =.=. Although I only do it and will only do it once in a while, I like to draw this type of drawing. This would be one of my entries (some of you might have seen it on my facebook page ;] ):
And here's the explanation of the drawing:
Title: Guitar
Watercolor on 15"x22" paper

Artist's comment:
The representation of lively/calm tune by the image of beach scene.

The rainbow (6 colors instead of the 7 spectrum) can represent the guitar strings and the colors is meant to depict the liveliness of the tune. The wavy style of the rainbow shows the vibration to produce sound.

The sun, is the representation of sound hole on a guitar and it is integral in producing a great melody just like how the sun to the rainbow.

The coconut tree like figure is made such that it looks as if it is strumming or picking the rainbow (Strings)

The dots on the beach sand is to represent sands rocks or shells on the beach but it's done in a regular manner/pattern not because it appears in that way in reality but it's to take the form of the regularity of a tune produced by a guitar.

How is the process like?

I've been getting some questions on how is process of drawing is actually like.
So, I'm just gonna dedicate a post just for the process though I've roughly mentioned it via the "Ask Somemore" post.

So here goes:

1. Pencil drafting

2. Overlay with pen

3. Brush if necessary

4. Erase the pencil drafts

5. Scan

6. Edit in photoshop (to add texts, or correct certain parts)

7. Done!

For a single post, all the process maybe sum up to 3-6 hours and it takes less than 5 minutes to read :(
Nevertheless, I hope you enjoy this site.

In case you are curious, this sketch is done for the CCA-Club I'm (and I sketched it just for fun and to promote them abit lolz) in and they are organizing this IT Flair, you can go to http://nussucblc.wordpress.com for more info. If you are in NUS, you might want to come and look around.

Ask Somemore

Q: Who are you?
A: Oh, I'm just a normal University student in my final year. I finished my Final Year Report and decided to cut down on computer gaming with my friends to draw and share all this.

Q: How did your character come about?
A: It's actually trying to depict me in real life, but of course i may add some fictional elements on it.
My drawing style is highly influenced by the Japanese Mangas drawing style. In fact there are few Japanese Manga/Anime characters which had given me much inspiration
Please allow me to explain: (ah yes, they are all characters with glasses)
From left: It's my own character and I try to depict myself in a cuter manner :p

second: Nobita Nobi is a lazy, dependent, crybaby character from the famous manga Doraemon. It might look childish but it's one of the greatest Japanese manga you'd ever remember in your life.

third: Conan Edogawa, I am by no means similar to him, I just think he's quite unique and smart.

fourth: Shimura Shinpachi is a very normal and boring character which perfectly describes me. The jokes around him always includes that his identity is pretty much is in his glasses. Something similar to my case huh?

fifth: Urashima Keitarou is just a lucky bastard who is very timid when it comes to girls and relationship, in the end he got a happy ending. While my story goes as my life goes and it might not end happy :-|

So, let's take Nobita's laziness, dependence and crybaby-ness, Conan's cuteness, Shinpachi's boring and normal traits, and Keitarou's timidity: it would be William hahaha.

Q: How long do you normally spend for one post?
A: 3-5 hours on the average: You can refer to here for the process

Q: Where is the story?
A: It's just a few-frame illustrations about life, there's not much story in it as it is only trying to depict funny funny thoughts that I always have in my mind.
Think of the comics as a very simple comic strips

Q: Jokes? I don't see any
A: Well, the sketches are created from a timid guy from an Asian perspective. There are a lot of people with different cultures and some of the things that I'm trying to present might not appear as funny to some people.

There are also a lot of local references on the sketches which you might not get (e.g. the backgrounds might be that of the University I'm studying in, the dorm, etc.)

Q: Why isn't your character that consistent in your comic strips?
A: Yeah, I do realize that. I will do my best to improve the consistency of the character.

Q: Why don't you add some colors to make it livelier?
A: Yeap, maybe during my holidays?

Q: Badi Glaf? Bady Glaff? Bady Glaf?
A: Oh, just a spoof of my very favorite brand for apparel: Body Glove (nope, I'm not paid, and I hope they won't be mad as I refer them as those names above)

Q: And what is Luimenta?
A: Hmm, just my father's surname since I don't bear any on my own. I used to, though.

If you have any other relevant questions, please include it on the comment and I will be more than glad to answer it, if it helps you..
Enjoy =)
